There are two things I miss being about my hometown of Los Angeles: 1) my favorite papas breakfast burrito in the world (obviously) to cure even the most heinous of hangovers, and 2) the relatively easy access to open green spaces. So I was very much looking forward to attending my cousin’s beautiful wedding back home while also getting the chance to show Danny around LA from a local’s perspective (whatever that means?).
OK I guess the view of the Hollywood Sign from Griffith Park Observatory isn’t the first thing you think of when you hear the words “LA local”, but the panoramic views from Downtown all the way to Santa Monica beach were a must since Danny’s never been before. We had pretty ambitious plans of hiking to the peak after gorging ourselves with In-N-Out Burger, but let’s not fool ourselves here folks. Nobody walks in LA.
We were super excited to be in town for Guillermo del Toro: At Home With Monsters at LACMA. The exhibit featured tons of movie props, costumes, inspiration from his own personal collection and artist works inspired by the director.
My personal favorite has to be the Fauno from Pan’s Labyrinth and the recreation of del Toro’s personal rain room in his LA residence. It’s so emo/goth it hurts.
Aside from the usual must eat food spots (i.e. Tacos Villa Corona, Cole’s French Dip, Korean BBQ), we rounded out the trip with cocktails and karaoke at Charlie Pie’s favorite den of iniquity, Smog Cutter and a one night stay at the Ace Hotel in DTLA.
Til next time LA– can’t wait to visit again next summer when Jenny and Alex tie the knot!
